Brief Description:
The Barony of Pfalzengrim is on the west side of the middle of the Duchy of Upper Fulgau. It has good drainage, poor soils, and lots of craftsmen trying to find ways to use them. The Baron likes to make money the old fashioned way:looting and pillaging. So usually it is Baroness Anna and their retainers who run things .Recently she convinced him to turn their serfs into tenants. His opinion was: “What the hell. It might work.â€

Anna glares at Manfred in exasperation. "And what does he think we are going to eat all winter?"

Manfred gestures at the letter. He knew her tempers well. He knew his job well, too. "We have enough. He is the Baron. What else is there to say?"

I'm sure I can think of plenty. "All right. Add it to the luggage. And get to work on the recruiting. Only men who have their own horses: we can't afford those."

She turns to Sir Eberhard. "Yours is the happy task of deciding who gets to double up until we can build in the spring."

She stomps out of the room, cursing the efficiency of the Imperial Post, and goes to finish packing for court.

By order of His Excellency, Lothar von Hügeleute, Baron of Pfalzengrim:

Desiring to increase his men-at-arms, the Baron offers good wages and opportunity for glory to soldiers seeking employ. Those interested must be able to provide their own horse. Bonuses will be paid to those already owning arms and armor as well. Positions for company commanders and sergeants are available for veterans with adequate experience. Apply to Sir Eberhart Holzfäller, Castellan of Schloss Pfalzengrim.

Sir Matthias von Flügekeiler leads the barony's cavalry, including the newly formed unit, north to Bergeheim. He was not sure if he should hope the fighting was still going on when they got there or not. Well, they got paid either way. And the new unit would get practice riding together. He tried to figure out what drills could be practiced while they were on the road. If they did have to fight when they got there, they were going to need them.

He looked at the numbers. He kept looking at them. He kept looking at them a long time.

Good Goddess.

“That’s with the road work paid for?â€

“Yes.â€

“And without a kickback from the glass guild?â€

“Yes.â€

He shook his head.

“Told you it would work.â€

He nodded. “The amber monopoly is still, what, a third of that?â€

“Around that. I agree with you on that one. It is nice to have something to fall back on.â€

“Oh, good. That makes two things I get to be right about.â€

She arched an eye brow. “What’s the other?â€

He grinned. “The tiara I’ll be fetching you next month, princess.â€

Manfred cleared his throat. “Excellency, there are still many projects we—â€

“Manfred.†He scowled. “Cousin. If you go do something useful, I promise I’ll pick you up a present too, okay?â€

“I don’t have much use for jewelry.â€

“I was thinking more like a fresco painter. Your chapel could use some bright colors.†Anna giggled. Lothar went ack to grinning. “Now get. Her Excellency and I wish to celebrate.â€

Manfred got.
