    Controlled Burns

That was incredibly helpful, thank you. And that's a fascinating story about your cousin.

    Controlled Burns

Story takes place in the real world during present day, and the reason for the fire is mainly to promote tree growth as the seeds require fire to release.

    Controlled Burns

I need information on modern day controlled burns, preferably controlled burns in forests. Specifically I want to know the process of how they burn and what kind of equipment and methods they use as well as who exactly is in charge of doing that kind of stuff. I'm in the middle of researching...

What Scenes give you most trouble?

I noticed a lot of people mentioned dialogue and I feel that I'm actually pretty comfortable with it. I think perhaps it's because dialogue is the thing that grabs my attention on the page the most when I read so it's what I try to focus a lot on. I think any kind of action happens in my...

What Best Connects A Series of Short Stories?

I think setting the stories in the same world is enough as long its identifiable the same world, which you would achieve simply by keeping core ideas behind the world consistent and reappearing.

Animal Collective's bizarre style is definitely inspiring to me. I listen to this all the time.

Just about everything Pink Floyd is great for writing, especially if I'm writing science fiction. It's hard to pic one song that captures that but I'll post the one I (probably) listen to the most: I also often listen to their album Animals, which is a bit of a Animal Farm inspired story...

    What are your favorite quotes?

"For though he was master of the world, he was not quite sure what to do next. But he would think of something.” -Arther C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey " Dr. Ian Malcolm: John, the kind of control you're attempting simply is... it's not possible. If there is one thing the history of...

    Reusing Ideas

I've been talking about this a lot in the chat recently. I wrote one failed attempt at a horror novel and one terrible short story and found both to be unsalvageable. Then I started thinking up a new story that was essentially a hybrid of the two. I thought what I'd come up with was decent, but...

Please help me not !@#$ my novel up

my twin brother is gay, so I have a little bit of knowledge I can dispense; really, it's just like writing a normal relationship. The only difference is that we're dealing with two men, and with that means that they have the same flaws and thought processes of men. There tends to be a trope that...

The Hands of Fate Part 1 and 2 from the film Signs is another emotional piece of music I listen to while writing. Part 1 is amazing because it goes from scary, to somber, to revelation, to heroic action all in one piece, and part 2 is amazing because of how beautiful it sounds. What makes it all...

My character doesn't like her name. Help

I don't think two Rs are neccecary. I read them that way automatically. My favorites of the batch are Antari, Akari, and Atara. All of them are fine though, in my opinion.

    space ship food production

How far into the future are we talking? If you've got advanced space travel, then it's not impossible that we've got advanced genetic engineering. So genetically engineered plants that thrive in a space environment, have a ton of nutrition, and don't require a lot of maintenance. Of course...

I think the original version by Tears for Fears is superior. :P Here's an orchestrated piece that I absolutely love and I tend to listen to it any time I'm trying to write a deeply emotional scene. It's certainly the absolute most emotional piece of music I've ever listened to.
