We like to imagine ancient Egypt as a rich civilization, but while agriculture along the Nile did support a large population, the society was characterized by remarkable socioeconomic inequality. Most Egyptians did not live in grand palaces like the Pharaohs, and I wanted to capture that disparity with this scene by juxtaposing the palace against the commoners' mud huts. There's probably a ton of perspective errors in here, but it was nonetheless fun practice for drawing cityscapes.
The sky isn't meant to be dark or smoky; that's simply my failed attempt to render in its blueness.
