Rydh makes a broad swing in the gathering smoke, but the creature ducks the blow. It appears unaffected by the smoke and heat rapidly filling the corridor. Its body is little more than a shadow in the haze, its eyes two dancing points of light. It lashes out at Rydh:
Rydh continues to avoid the creature's attacks, dodging the first and batting the second away with the flat of his sword. He hears a familiar voice and loud footsteps thudding up the steps. Out of his peripheral vision he see Baldhart crest the top of the stairs in long strides.
There is a crack, and the sound of flames get louder as a portion of the ceiling behind Rydh collapses. The flames take hold instantly in the heated hallway.
Cadell makes a brave attack, taking an arrow in hand and lunging at the nearest creature. The thing dodges the attack and counters with two of its own, its companion arriving to flank Cadell. That creature lashes out with both clawed hands as well, but Cadell is like a blur, dodging away from their strikes. ((I can't put 4 more graphics in this post, but they all missed by a long shot)).
Ankari takes a step back in the hallway, toward the window, but keeps sight of his target. He looses an arrow that flies wide, perhaps knocked off course by the air in the temple that is starting to move like a hot wind as more and more of the temple writhes in flame.
Matthew finds a couple of villagers have assisted him in helping the priest, Father Harald, to his feet. The man is still unsteady, but leans heavily on Matthew. He motions toward the well at the center of the town square and tries to take a step down the stairs, still gripping Matthew's arm.
Aliron descends the rope to the ground, then sprints toward the front door of the temple. He is halfway up the steps, and sees Matthew supporting an aging priest whose clothes are blackened and burned.
Nodrick finds himself alone with Burnbright, the sound of fighting and flames distant. The girl sounds like she has a cold, her nose stuffed with drying blood. "I want to go back to the Crow."
((Legendary - Baldhart can attack this round. She's just arrived up the stairs. You don't have to keep those old rolls - feel free to roll again. The statistical distribution of our die roller seems off, though. If it doesn't improve I may seek an alternative)).
I duck and swerve as the creatures attack me from two sides at once, the arrow still tight in my hand. Their blows miss, only stirring the air around me, but unfortunately wafting the smoke in my direction. I lunge at the creature who attacks from my left, ducking low to stab at its stomach with the arrow.
The building is coming down around us now. It's only a matter of time. This may be a good place to die, here in some kind of temple.
Despite the flames and smoke in my eyes, I knock aside one of the creature's attacks and thrust for low center mass. If Betula wills it, I'll disembowel the demon. If not...
((The way the fire is raging makes me think I may want to have a backup character waiting in the wings to take over should something fall and land on Rydh))
((Between my first hit, Sparkie's latest, and this hit, the creature must be dead by now.))
"Rydh. The basement is safe. Let's move!"
As soon as the beast drops, I take Rydh by the hand and lead him into the basement. We'll head out the double doors and meet Nod and Burnbright.
((EDIT - Since I rolled for a STR check today, the roll can apply to Baldhart pulling Rydh to safety as soon as the enemy falls. I don't know whether her strength is needed, but Rydh's failed CON check might mean he needs guidance to the doorway.))
I turn to Burnbright. "Yeah, let's get you away from all this. They'll come back looking for us I'm sure." We head back towards the Hooded Crow. I ready my crossbow in case something jumps out at us. We'll be safe, Nod. Safe, safe, safe.
I continue up the stairs, I think I see a beast in the door, so I will draw a sword and attack directly. If beast has fallen I will stop prior to the door or if the other character outside steps in front of me.
"I fear the building is lost. I hope no one is trapped inside." I tell the group at the door.
to miss
for damage, if for some reason that hits. (lol)
[I am assuming all I know is the one person fighting one or two beasts, and don't see the other character since he is behind the wall.]
((Not at my computer with my map files, so no new map. However, Rydh and Baldhart have moved to the basement. Matthew is moving away from the building with Father Harald. Cadell and Ankari are in the same place, and Aliron is next to Cadell, in the space between Cadell and Ankari)).
Nodrick
It's easy enough to move Burnbright away from the temple and wind your way through nearby buildings in the direction of the Hooded Crow. The attention of the townsfolk is still fixed on the burning temple, so no one pays you much attention. As you walk, Burnbright finally stops leaning on you and walks entirely under her own power. Her nose has stopped bleeding, and she wipes away dried blood as you walk. She looks like a complete mess, but as you walk, she finds her voice again. "What were those things down there? Some kind of demons? If it wasn't for them I bet I could have made it into the temple and saved somebody. Do you think father Harald is OK? Why did those bad monsters kill the people in the cellar? Where'd they even come from. Did you see what they did with the...writing on the wall?" She continues in this manner as you walk.
Baldhart and Rydh
Rydh's attack strikes home this time, though he feels it more than he sees it in the thickening smoke. The creature doesn't fall, however, and the vague outline of the thing appears ready to lash out again. Baldhart bursts through the doorway, having come up the stairs, and runs her sword through the thing, her blade entering just beneath the armpit of its upraised right hand and punching well into its chest. With a wheezing sigh, the creature slumps, sliding off the end of the sword and to the ground.
By this time Rydh is bent over coughing from the smoke. It is hard for him to take a step without doubling over. Baldhart loops one strong arm around his waist and forces him into the stairwell. The corridor behind where Rydh fought comes crashing down in an explosion of flame, black smoke, and heat. Even a few steps down the staircase, however, the air is much more clear and the heat is lessened. The stone walls around the two are reassuring.
Matthew
Matthew moves into the town center, calling for his horse. The well-trained animal canters over, nervous of the flame but approaching Matthew just the same. The horse nuzzles his arm and snorts. Father Harald sucks in a couple of deep breaths and tries to stand more upright. He looks back to the temple. "My...there are two men inside. Someone must help them." The words are forced out and he slumps again, weakened.
Cadell, Ankari, and Aliron
Cadell attacks again, but the creature is just too swift and the arrow too short a weapon to provide a broad sweep. The thing leaps free of Cadell's swing and seems to sneer. The three companions hear the corridor to their left collapse and a fresh plume of black smoke billows out the front door, further obscuring the area. Ankari's arrow misses again, striking the wall of the temple with a thud. Aliron appears in the doorway, looking much like a wraith in the thick smoke. Sword in hand, he slashes at the creature, but its shadowy form is no longer there when the blade places through where it stood.
Both creatures remain engaged with Cadell, each striking twice. They are not the only fast-moving targets in the hallway, however. Cadell twists and turns with their blows, attempting to dodge them.
Three of the attacks on Cadell miss, the elf moving nimbly to avoid them or knocking aside the gnarled arms of the creatures with his own. The closer their attacks come, the greater the heat radiating from them. Still, fast as Cadell is, one of the attacks breaks through his defenses. The creature's claws rake across Cadell's arm, drawing blood and then almost immediately searing the wound close, blackening the skin.
One of the creatures finally manages to wound me, scoring a deep gash in my left arm that is quickly cauterized and closed. I stumble back with a cry and drop my arrow to clutch at the wound. The pain and the sight of the wound, after so many close calls, only makes me angrier. I retaliate against the monster who wounded me -- I dive low this time, snatching up the dropped arrow in my right hand and taking another stab at the monster's left leg to cripple it.
Damned fire! Damned temple! Damned creatures! The fire creatures don't seem to want to flee the collapsing deathtrap of a temple. We saved what we came for and I would have loved to leave these demons to their handiwork, except they also mean to cook Cadell in his armor.
I continue to work my way to the window to make my escape. "Cadell, we need to go."
I launch another arrow at the fire creatures.
((eh, this is the third really low roll in as many attempts. Isn't that weird?))
Within the swirling ash and burning sulfur she stood vigilant, her sword leveled at the gorgon. It charged her with all its might, and Drusillia held her ground, poised to strike her foe down...
3rd of Battles - Codex 6:761
*****
I'm coughing so hard I nearly leave my sword in that monster as Baldhart pulls me away and down into the cellar. My eyes sting, and I can't seem to catch my breath until we get to clear air. Through the tears I look to the cellar walls and-
I must be hallucinating. Are there really two dead men in here? And blood on the wall? NO! Handwriting on the wall, in blood!
"Evil," I manage to hack out of my increasingly sore throat.
No matter to Baldhart, apparently. She keeps pulling my arm, leading me out of the cellar. She says "Come on! We have to get to them!"
I go with her willingly, of course, as she leads me by the arm. I trust Baldhart more than... More than...
((I'll speak for LS a bit here. Baldhart and Rydh will both be going out of the cellar, with the intention of re-entering the building through the door Baldhart previously smashed.))
I cease listening to Burnbright after she rattles on. Just shut up. Shut up. Shut up.
"Shut up," I say. Oh, was that aloud? Crap. "I mean, quiet down now. We're safe, that's all that matters. You go in the inn and sit down and I'll pour you some...uh, what do children drink? Rum? Rum is safe right?"
Get rid of her, Nod. You have more heroics to perform. The more heroics, the more the group will accept me. The more they accept me, the more I can--
Rydh is fine, thankfully, or I could never forgive myself.
"Sorry - Burnbright needed me - I thought Ankari--"
I thought Ankari would be there with Rydh. He's too brave and too sensible to leave one of us alone in a desperate life-or-death struggle. If he chose not to follow Rydh, it is for good reason.
"--he's still fighting - must run!"
We do not stop for any reason. Through the basement, then back into the door, full speed ahead! My long legs make great strides to stay in front of Rydh. He must be safe. I fear his healing magic will be needed.
The fire begins to spread across the first floor, moving from right to left, the flames starting along the ceiling as the second floor is engulfed in flames, then moving down along the wood of the walls. Only areas of stone wall and archway are spared.
Cadell stabs an arrow into the left leg of the strange creature in front of him. The creature hisses in pain, though the arrow begins to burn almost immediately. Thick, black blood oozes from the wound and then is charred around the entry point. The creature does not go down, but the wound hobbles it, and it twists awkwardly, trying to ready itself for another attack. Before it can do so, Aliron, who has slipped quietly behind the thing, shoves his sword through the creature's back, the tip of the weapon punching through the thing's chest. The creature sags to the floor, lifeless.
Ankari looses another arrow, which misses the target just as it sinks to the ground. After firing, Ankari is able to reach the window, the cool air of the night a pleasant contrast to the heat inside the temple.
The creature to Cadell's left is unhindered. With a fierce cry at seeing the last of its companions go down, the monster leaps bodily at Cadell, it's two claws hands tracing vicious arcs through the smoky air.
Both attacks land, and with much force behind them, the creature's claws digging into Cadell's flesh, the heat from the thing's hands searing his flesh. Cadell tries to right himself, but his legs buckle and he tumbles to the ground by the doorway.
((Cadell took 9 points of damage. Having 6 left at the start of the round, he is now at -3, which means he is unconscious. Unless attended to, he will lose 1 hit point per round until reaching -10, at which point death occurs. In other words, someone needs to get to him and stabilize him within 7 rounds)).
Baldhart and Rydh have run most of the way down the left-hand corridor, having re-entered the temple through the back door. The temperature has risen greatly and there is the sound of battle ahead.
Matthew
Matthew remains beside Father Harald. The man seems to have gained some strength and has turned to look at the temple, eyes glistening. "Ah, my poor, dear friends..." he mutters. One of the townsfolk puts a hand on Matthew's shoulder and says "Get the Father to the Hooded Crow. They'll have beds for him there. I'll fetch the priestess." The man runs off into the night and other townspeople gather around to see if they can help Matthew with Father Harald.
((Since Baldhart & Rydh went in through the back, they didn't pass Matthew so he couldn't call out to them)).
Nodrick
Burnbright narrows her eyes, which have a mischievous glint when Nodrick tells her to shut up. She looks about to say something just as the two enter the Hooded Crow, but a cry of alarm causes her head to jerk around. Grim's wife, left alone to tend the tavern, has her hands pressed against both cheeks, eyes wide at the sight of Burnbright. She shakes herself, grabs a mop from against the bar, and wielding it cross-ways stomps toward Nodrick and Burnbright. Her eyes are fixed on Nodrick. "You! What have you done to that girl? So help me, if you've hurt her..." The woman is so angry she chokes on whatever she was going to say next, still advancing toward Nodrick.
